About Frenay & Lenin
In the 20+ years that the SAMMY (Syracuse Area Music) Awards have been honoring CNY musicians, the first two people to be inducted into the SAMMY’s Hall of Fame twice, were Gary Frenay & Arty Lenin; once as individuals (2006) and again as members of their band, The Flashcubes (2012). They have also been honored at the annual awards ceremony with trophies for Best Acoustic Act, Best Singer/Songwriter (Gary, twice), Best Rock Instrumentalist (Arty) and Best Rock Album (The Flashcubes - Sportin’ Wood, and The Flashcube - Forever). During the past 40+ years they have been known by several names: the raucous new wave/rock’n’roll of The Flashcubes, the stylish dance-pop of Screen Test, and the harmony-based oldies rock of The Neverly Brothers Band and The FabCats (formerly the Fab Five). No matter what the name, the music that these two talented musicians have performed has always featured great harmony vocals and dazzling guitar work.
Individually and collectively their credits are extensive:
SAMMY (Syracuse Area Music) Awards and/or nominations for Best Folk Rock Group, Best Acoustic Act, Best Singer/Songwriter, Best Rock Instrumentalist and Best Album Release (local and national).
Opening appearances with the Police, U2, Bryan Setzer, Squeeze, Pat Benatar, Stephen Stills, Badfinger, Matthew Sweet, Joe Jackson , the Ramones, The Hollies, Ani DiFranco, Don McLean, Shawn Mullins and many others.
Recorded appearances on over 30 releases together and close to 50 releases collectively (on LP, 45, CD and Cassette).
Live appearances throughout North America and abroad in Japan, Italy, France, Spain and Great Britain.
Media appearances on national radio and television programs (including MTV and The Jenny Jones Show) and in international magazines (including Goldmine, Billboard, Variety, Dirty Linen, Trouser Press and Playboy).
Among their many strengths is a vast repertoire of material that includes over 1,500 songs from every style of music imaginable and a combination of experience and spontaneity that allows them to create a unique musical performance for any audience of any age.
